JAGUAR JOURNAL FEBRUARY/MARCH 1994 PART 1: A Time Line of the Past PART 2: 1995 - The Year of the Jaguar PART 3: 1995 - Software Preview SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT: Tips of the Trade part 1: A TIME-LINE OF THE PAST June, 1993 - Atari unveils the 64-bit project they claimed to have been working on for more than three years, at the Summer CES. The name of the machine was the Jaguar. They also announced that more than 20 licensees were signed to make 3rd party games for the Jaguar. 4th Quarter, 1993 (October-December) - Atari rolls out the Jaguar in a New York, Los Angeles, London, and Paris. Also, many mail order companies begin to carry the Jaguar. Atari releases the Jaguar with Cybermorph, a 3D polygon-graphical game like Star Fox for the Super Nintendo. Also released was a game containing awesome graphics and not much else, Crescent Galaxy. Evolution: Dino Dudes, better known as Humans to the Sega Genesis fans, was put on the shelves. Finally, the game that's on every system, Raiden, was released. Atari also did a Mall Tour, although I believe it has only been to three or four malls! January, 1994 - Atari uncovers Tempest 2000 at the Winter CES, and it gets wide attention. Alien vs. Predator, Club Drive, Checkered Flag, and Kasumi Ninja, among others, were also shown at the show. March, 1994 - Tempest 2000 is released and it the first shipment is gone within 48 hours. Tempest 2000 receives Game of the Month in two magazines and high ratings in Game Pro. The game would later get Game of the Year from EGM. June, 1994 - The Summer CES was full of many great products for the Jaguar. Three got lots of attention. The first was the Jaguar CD accessory. The second was Rayman, from UBI Soft., and this was one of the best looking games ever for the Jaguar (or any system). Finally, Iron Soldier (from Atari) was released. It was a mech-warrior game, and those have been rare. July, 1994 - Atari releases a limited quantity of Id's Wolfenstein 3D. All 3000 were sold in under 48 hours. A full release happened about 3 weeks later. August, 1994 - Telegames releases Brutal Sports Football, the 1st third party title, in limited quantities. October, 1994 - After a 6 month waiting period full of promises then delays, Atari releases the very-much anticipated Alien vs. Predator. The game is raved about everywhere! November, 1994 - Atari releases Id's Doom for the Jaguar, while Atari releases Club Drive. Brutal Sports Football was also released, this time nationally. December, 1994 - A slew of Jaguar games were released, including Checkered Flag, Iron Soldier, Bubsy, Zool 2, and Kasumi Ninja. January, 1994 - Val d'Isere Skiing and Snowboarding is released for the Jaguar in early January. February, 1994 - Atari announces that six third party games will be shipped by March 21st and in stores. The first one, Cannon Fodder, is in stores on February 17. part 2: 1995 - The Year Of The Jaguar? There is no question that the Atari had some built up rustiness in the video game department in 1994. But now, Atari has had time to get back on track, and they are. With the Sony Playstation, Sega Saturn, Nintendo Ultra 64, PC-FX, and Nintendo Virtua Boy making their market debuts this year, Atari has to do something big. Plus, the 3DO company is going to be putting out the FZ-10 model, a $199 3DO. In addition, they will be making a 64 bit upgrade cart for the 3DO as well. Atari has already taken some steps in getting ready for these new systems and 3DO changes. First, they are going to put out the Jaguar Core Set. For $149.99, you will get a Jaguar and one controller. This will give buyers the option of chosing a game that they want, such as Alien vs. Predator or Tempest 2000. When you buy a $189.99 Jaguar (with Cybermorph), you can get a free second controller ($25 value) and a free game, Wolfenstein 3D ($60 value) or Tempest 2000 ($50 value). Atari retailers including Electronic Boutique, Babbages, and Toys R Us will be lowering the price of the Cybermorph set to $189.99, during the beginning of 2nd Quarter. Finally, Atari has lowered the price of the CD-ROM to $149.99 (originally it was going to be $199.99), and it will include a game (Blue Lightening). The CD is due out in April or May, and 4-6 titles will be released with the CD. part 3: 1995 SOFTWARE PREVIEW There are a ton of games coming out before June - and Atari projects, with 3rd party games, that there will be around 130 titles playable at year's end. Litter Box by Jeffrey Norwood I hope that you have enjoyed this special edition of the Jaguar Journal. The Jaguar is looking stronger than ever before, and you can see by the list that the Jaguar will NOT be an all CD game system, the way the Turbo Grafx turned out to be. Out of the 100+ titles, 27 are CD games. But don't let that discourage you from getting this accessroy. At $149.99 (with a game), its a complete blowout! Add to that a handful of great CD games including Primal Rage, Thea Realm Fighters, Brett Hull Hockey, and Demoltion Man (to name a few), and you've got a great piece of hardware. For cartridge fans, there are a ton of great titles coming out. Defender 2000, Dactyl Joust, Fight For Life, RayMan, Rise of the Robots, and Troy Aikman NFL Football are just a five of the 70+ carts planned for the 1995. For large parties, the Cat Box is what you need. The Cat Box gives capabilites like having up to 8 players (Air Cars, Battlesphere), or hooking up two Jagaurs to play face-to-face (Doom). Although role-playing-games (RPG's) have been rare on all systems in 1994 and the start of '95, the Jaguar has few coming out. They are an unknown RPG from Level 7 Software, Robinson's Requiem (CD), and Dungeon Depths. For those 2600 fans, Pitfall, Defender 2000, and Joust are all coming to the Jaguar. Fighting fans ought to be very happy in '95. With Ultra Vortex, Primal Rage, Thea Realm Fighters, Fight For Life, Rainbow Warriors, Double Dragon V, and Virtual Warriors making their way to the Jaguar, the tough part will be chosing the best one. Finally, sports fans should be very very very very (did I say very?) happy. Troy Aikman, Charles Barkley, Hardball, Jack Nicklaus, Bowling, Racing, Cricket, Mini-Golf, and Soccer (to name a few) games coming to the Jaguar, you'll forget they ever existed on TV (I already forgot baseball was on TV ... it just seems they're out to lunch or something.) So, may 1995 be the year of the Jagaur! I'm getting that CD soon - or should I get some games??? Oh no! Too many great games. Not enough $$$! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! D O T H E M A T H - - G E T B I T !
